Retirement & Benefits Guide in Bahrain
Retirement visas, pensions, and healthcare for retirees
Retirement Visa Program
No dedicated retirement or passive income visa program exists for expats in Bahrain. Expats can apply for standard residence visas sponsored by employers or investors, or explore long-term visit visas, but no retiree-specific path to residency is available.
Pension System
Social insurance system (PAYG) provides old-age pensions at age 60 (men)/60 (women from 2022 reforms) with 2% of average earnings per contribution year, max 80-90% replacement; reforms raise contributions to 20% by 2028 and require 20 years for full pension to ensure sustainability.
Pension Adequacy
Replacement rates up to 90% for long-career contributors but lower for shorter periods; expats receive end-of-service benefits (4.2-8.4% monthly contributions since Mar 2024) instead of full pensions, with limited adequacy for non-citizens.
Healthcare Access
High-quality private healthcare widely available to expats with insurance; public system primarily for citizens, but legal residents can access via employer insurance or private plans. Modern facilities in Manama, though costs can be high without coverage.
