Climate & Weather Guide in Brunei

Climate zones, seasonal temperatures, rainfall patterns, and best travel times

Brunei is a very small, humid equatorial country on northern Borneo, so its climate is broadly uniform across the country. It has a tropical rainforest climate under Köppen classification, with hot temperatures year-round, very high humidity, and abundant rainfall. Recent national climate reporting shows an annual mean temperature of 28.5 C in 2023, about 0.5 C above the long-term average, and rainfall remains frequent throughout the year. For residents and expats, the main realities are persistent warmth, heavy rain in the northeast monsoon season, and limited seasonal variation rather than true summer and winter contrasts.

Regional Climate Variations

Coastal Lowlands and Bandar Seri Begawan Area

This low-lying coastal zone has the most typical Brunei climate for daily life: hot, very humid, and frequently rainy in every month. Temperatures stay fairly steady through the year, but the northeast monsoon can bring especially heavy downpours in November and December. Coastal areas are generally less wet than the interior, yet still receive very high annual rainfall. For residents, the climate feels sticky and warm, with limited cooling except during rain showers and at night.

Winter:26-29°C
Very high rainfall

Warm, muggy, and rain-prone all year, with short intense showers and a heavy monsoon season that can make outdoor plans unreliable.

Interior Highlands and Ulu Temburong

Brunei’s inland and forested upland areas are the wettest parts of the country and are strongly shaped by dense rainforest conditions. Rainfall is extremely frequent, and humidity is consistently high, making the air feel damp even when temperatures are not at their peak. The interior can feel slightly cooler at times than the coast, especially at night or during cloudy periods, but it remains firmly tropical. This zone is best suited to people who can handle constant moisture and lush, green surroundings.

Summer:27-31°C
Winter:25-28°C
Very high rainfall

A deeply tropical rainforest environment: frequent rain, saturated air, lush vegetation, and very little temperature relief across seasons.

Brunei has one of the most uniform climates in Asia: hot, humid, and rainy throughout the year, with no real cold season. For residents and expats, the main appeal is the absence of temperature extremes, while the main adjustment is living with frequent heavy rain, high humidity, and a consistently tropical feel.
