Climate & Weather Guide in Rwanda

Climate zones, seasonal temperatures, rainfall patterns, and best travel times

Rwanda is a small, highly elevated East African country with a generally mild tropical highland climate rather than extreme heat. Most of the country experiences warm days, cool nights, and two rainy seasons, while lower eastern areas are noticeably hotter and drier than the western and northern highlands. Recent climatology and Köppen-Geiger mapping show a mix of tropical rainforest, tropical savanna, and temperate highland conditions, with local variation driven mainly by altitude and relief. For residents and expats, the climate is often comfortable by regional standards, but humidity, heavy seasonal rains, and occasional dry-season dust or heat in the east can affect daily life.

Regional Climate Variations

Eastern Lowlands

Rwanda’s eastern lowlands are the warmest and driest part of the country, with more open savanna-like landscapes and a longer dry season than the rest of Rwanda. The climate is more typical of tropical savanna conditions, with hotter afternoons, lower humidity, and more frequent water stress in the dry months. This region can feel significantly warmer than Kigali or the western highlands, especially for newcomers not used to tropical heat. It is generally more suitable for people who prefer sunshine and less persistent rain, though temperatures and exposure can feel more demanding in daily life.

Summer:24-29°C
Winter:18-23°C
Low to moderate rainfall

Warm, sunnier, and drier than the rest of the country, with a more open and semi-arid feel during the dry season.

Central Plateau and Kigali

The central plateau, including Kigali, has a comfortable tropical highland climate moderated by elevation. Days are usually warm rather than hot, and nights are cooler than in the east, which makes this zone one of the most livable for expats. Rainfall is seasonal and can be intense during the wetter months, but the overall climate is less humid and less rainy than the western mountains. For many residents, this is the best balance of warmth, manageable humidity, and urban convenience.

Summer:22-27°C
Winter:16-21°C
Moderate rainfall

Mild by tropical standards, with warm days, cooler evenings, and distinct rainy seasons that shape outdoor planning.

Western Highlands and Lake Kivu

The western highlands and Lake Kivu corridor are among Rwanda’s most temperate and scenic areas, with cooler conditions created by elevation and frequent cloud cover. Rainfall is generally higher here than in the east, and the landscape stays greener for much of the year. The lake moderates temperatures along the shoreline, while nearby hills and mountains bring cooler nights and occasional mist. This region appeals to people who prefer fresher air, less heat, and a lush environment, though frequent rain can be a drawback for commuting and outdoor routines.

Summer:19-25°C
Winter:14-19°C
High rainfall

Cooler, greener, and more humid, with a mountain feel and frequent showers that keep the landscape lush.

Northern Volcano Region

The northern volcanic region is the coolest part of Rwanda and also one of the wettest, with high elevations strongly shaping the climate. Temperatures stay relatively mild year-round, and mornings and evenings can feel chilly compared with the rest of the country. Rainfall is substantial, supporting dense vegetation and productive agriculture, but also bringing frequent cloudiness and slippery roads during wet periods. For residents who dislike heat, this region offers Rwanda’s freshest climate, though it is less convenient if you want consistently dry weather.

Summer:17-23°C
Winter:12-17°C
Very high rainfall

Cool, humid, and mountain-influenced, with mist, frequent rain, and some of the most comfortable temperatures in the country.

Rwanda has a compact but strongly altitude-driven climate pattern, so residents can choose between warmer, drier eastern areas and cooler, wetter western and northern highlands. For most expats, Kigali and the central plateau offer the best overall balance of comfort, while the lake and mountain regions are ideal for cooler temperatures and greener scenery.
