Wehrpflichtgesetz (WPflG)

The Wehrpflichtgesetz (WPflG), or Military Service Act, is the German federal law that established and regulated mandatory military service for male citizens. Originally enacted in 1956 during the Cold War, it required German men to serve in the Bundeswehr (armed forces) for a specified period, typically around 18 months, with alternative civilian service (Zivildienst) available for conscientious objectors. The law was suspended in 2011 but has been subject to renewed discussions regarding potential reintroduction, particularly following geopolitical developments in Europe.
