Climate & Weather Guide in Burundi
Climate zones, seasonal temperatures, rainfall patterns, and best travel times
Burundi has a tropical climate moderated by altitude, with the central plateau generally mild, the western lowlands warmer, and the highest areas cooler. Current climatology for the 1991-2020 period shows average temperatures roughly between 16 C and 25 C, while most of the country receives around 1,300 to 1,600 mm of rain annually, with wetter highlands and drier lake-adjacent lowlands. The country has a pronounced dry season from June to September and two rainy seasons, making rainfall seasonality important for daily life, farming, and travel. For residents and expats, the climate is usually comfortable by tropical African standards, but heavy rains, erosion, and occasional flooding are practical risks.
