Climate & Weather Guide in Kuwait

Climate zones, seasonal temperatures, rainfall patterns, and best travel times

Kuwait has a hot desert climate with extremely long, very hot summers, short mild winters, and very low annual rainfall. Climate conditions are strongly shaped by aridity, intense sunshine, frequent dust and sand events, and large day-to-day temperature swings. Based on the country’s small size and limited climate diversity, most of Kuwait can be treated as one broadly uniform climate zone. For residents and expats, the main lifestyle challenge is coping with heat from late spring through early autumn, while the most comfortable outdoor period is usually from late autumn through early spring. The national climate is classified predominantly as hot desert under Köppen, with a small coastal influence near the Gulf.

Regional Climate Variations

Kuwait Coastal Belt

This narrow strip along the Persian Gulf feels slightly less extreme than the inland desert, but it is still very hot and dry for most of the year. Sea influence raises humidity, especially in summer, which can make the heat feel more oppressive even when temperatures are similar to inland areas. Winters are mild and pleasant, with the best outdoor comfort in the coolest months. Rainfall is sparse and irregular, usually arriving in brief winter showers rather than sustained wet periods.

Summer:35-43°C
Winter:10-18°C
Very low rainfall

Hot, humid coastal air in summer; milder evenings in winter; generally bright, dry, and windy conditions with occasional dusty weather.

Central Desert Plains

The central interior dominates Kuwait’s climate and is the most representative zone for the country overall. It experiences intense summer heat, very dry air, and strong sunshine for much of the year. Winter is short and comfortable compared with the summer season, but nights can still feel cool. Rainfall is minimal and highly variable, with most of it concentrated in the cooler months. Dust storms and strong winds are common enough to matter for daily life and outdoor planning.

Summer:38-45°C
Winter:8-16°C
Very low rainfall

Classic hot-desert conditions: severe summer heat, limited shade relief, crisp winter mornings, and frequent dry, sandy air that can reduce visibility.

Northern and Western Desert Fringe

The northern and western parts of Kuwait remain desert-dominated, but they can feel slightly less humid than the coast and somewhat more exposed to wind and temperature swings. Summers are still extremely hot, while winters are the most comfortable time of year for outdoor activity. Rain is infrequent, and when it does occur it often comes in short, localized events. This zone is important for understanding Kuwait’s climate variability because it often experiences the strongest wind-driven dust conditions.

Summer:37-45°C
Winter:7-15°C
Very low rainfall

Dry continental desert feel with big seasonal contrasts, low precipitation, and frequent wind-blown dust that can make the air feel harsher than temperatures suggest.

Kuwait is overwhelmingly a **hot desert climate** country, with only minor coastal moderation and very limited regional variation. For residents and expats, the main appeal is mild winter weather and abundant sunshine, while the main drawback is the long, severe summer heat and persistent dryness.
