Climate & Weather Guide in Lebanon

Climate zones, seasonal temperatures, rainfall patterns, and best travel times

Lebanon is a small country with strong climate contrasts despite its limited area of about 10,425 km2. Most of the country has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters, but elevation creates cooler mountain conditions and drier inland valley conditions. The coast is humid and mild in winter, the Mount Lebanon range is wetter and can receive snow, and the Bekaa Valley is colder in winter and hotter in summer with much less rainfall. Recent climate references describe the coast and southern half as hot-summer Mediterranean, while inland areas are warm-summer Mediterranean or pre-steppe Mediterranean. For residents and expats, climate comfort depends heavily on whether they prefer sea humidity, mountain coolness, or drier inland air.

Regional Climate Variations

Mediterranean Coast

The coastal plain and shoreline have the most moderated climate in Lebanon. Summers are hot and humid, with daytime highs often reaching the low to mid-30s C, while winters are mild and rainy. Rainfall is concentrated in the cool season, and humidity is noticeably higher than inland. This is the most urbanized and densely populated zone, so it is often the most practical for people who want access to services, but summer comfort can be reduced by humidity and limited nighttime cooling.

Summer:27-35°C
Winter:10-15°C
Moderate rainfall

Warm, humid summers and mild, rainy winters create a classic Mediterranean feel with strong seasonal contrast but generally comfortable winters.

Mount Lebanon Highlands

The Mount Lebanon highlands are cooler and wetter than the coast because of elevation. Winter brings frequent rain and snow, especially at higher altitudes, while summers stay dry but usually feel more pleasant than in the lowlands because of cooler evenings and lower humidity. This region offers the strongest seasonal variety in the country and is attractive to residents who prefer cooler air, mountain scenery, and a more distinct winter season. Snow and frost are common at higher elevations, which can affect transport and day-to-day life.

Summer:22-29°C
Winter:0-10°C
High rainfall

Cooler temperatures, wetter winters, and regular snow at elevation give this area a distinctly alpine-mediterranean feel.

Bekaa Valley

The Bekaa Valley lies between the mountain chains and has a much drier inland climate. Summers are hot and dry, with a stronger heat feel than the coast but lower humidity, while winters are colder and can bring frost. Rainfall is much lower than on the western slopes, and agriculture depends heavily on seasonal moisture and irrigation. For expats and residents who prefer dry heat and clearer seasonal contrasts, the Bekaa can be appealing, but it is less temperate in winter than the coast and generally less lush.

Summer:28-35°C
Winter:2-12°C
Low rainfall

A drier, more continental inland climate with hot summers, colder winters, and large day-night temperature swings.

Lebanon’s climate ranges from humid Mediterranean coastlines to cooler, wetter mountains and hot, dry inland valleys. For residents and expats, the coast offers the mildest winters, the mountains provide the coolest summers and snow, and the Bekaa Valley offers drier air with sharper temperature extremes.
