Environment & Sustainability Guide in Slovakia
Air quality, green spaces, and environmental policies
Air Quality Index
Air quality in Slovakia is stable with significant reductions in pollutant emissions since the mid-2010s due to industrial restructuring and regulations, but PM2.5 exposure remains above WHO's 5 µg/m³ guideline, especially in central regions from solid fuel heating and industry. Limit values for particulate matter and benzo(a)pyrene are still exceeded in some areas.
Water Quality
Water quality has improved but achieving good status for surface and groundwater bodies remains challenging. Wastewater treatment coverage is expanding, though only a small share receives advanced treatment, posing compliance issues for stricter EU standards, particularly in small municipalities.
Recycling System
Waste sorting has improved with new municipal waste separation obligations boosting circular material use, but municipal waste generation grows faster than GDP, and landfilling remains high. Total waste generation is below EU average.
Green Spaces
Slovakia boasts one of Europe's largest Natura 2000 networks and about 40% forest coverage with sustainable management, though bark beetle outbreaks and climate impacts drive high sanitary logging, affecting biodiversity like capercaillie habitats. A 2023 nature protection reform initiated zoning in national parks.
Environmental Policies
Slovakia has reduced GHG emissions by 50% since 1990 and meets NEC Directive targets, with a 2023 nature reform and NECP targeting 23% renewable energy by 2030. However, it ranks low in climate policy, opposing some EU renewable targets, and projections show no net-zero pathway.

Natural Disaster Risk
MODERATESlovakia faces moderate risks from floods, windstorms, and bark beetle outbreaks in forests, exacerbated by climate change.
Sustainability Initiatives
NECP targets 23% renewables by 2030; solar PV share rose to 1.4% of electricity in 2024. Coal plant shutdown in 2023, but fossil subsidies persist.
New obligations for municipal waste separation increase circular material use rate; waste generation below EU average but landfilling high.
2023 reform introduces zoning in national parks; large Natura 2000 network protects biodiversity.
