Climate & Weather Guide in Iraq
Climate zones, seasonal temperatures, rainfall patterns, and best travel times
Iraq has an overwhelmingly hot, dry climate, with very long summers, mild to cool winters, and strong regional contrasts between the arid south and west and the cooler, wetter north. Most of the country is classified as desert or steppe under Köppen-Geiger climate types, while the far north and northeastern mountains are cooler and receive more winter rain and some snow. The country is also very sunny, with long periods of clear sky and little or no rain during the hottest months. For residents and expats, heat management, water availability, and dust are major practical considerations, especially from late spring through early autumn.
