Politics & Government Guide in Mozambique

Political system, governance structure, stability indicators, and democratic institutions

Mozambique is a semi-presidential republic where President Daniel Chapo, elected in October 2024, serves as head of state and government alongside Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi. The ruling FRELIMO party maintains dominant control with a two-thirds majority in the 250-seat unicameral Assembly of the Republic, though the emergence of PODEMOS has challenged traditional opposition dynamics. The country operates under a 1990 constitution with a multi-party democratic framework, though executive power remains centralized with limited checks and balances from opposition parties.
