Retirement & Benefits Guide in Mozambique
Retirement visas, pensions, and healthcare for retirees
Retirement Visa Program
No dedicated retirement or passive income visa program exists in Mozambique. Expats can apply for standard business, work, or family reunion visas, or investment-based residency through the Migration Service.
Pension System
Pay-as-you-go contributory system via INSS with retirement at 60 (women)/65 (men) after 240 months contributions; average replacement based on last 5 years earnings divided by 420 months. Non-contributory basic social pension provides flat-rate 540-1,000 MZN monthly to needy elderly.
Pension Adequacy
Low replacement rates and minimal basic pension (90% of minimum wage) leave many retirees in poverty; supplementary private pensions limited. System covers formal sector only, excluding most informal workers.
Healthcare Access
Limited public healthcare system with poor infrastructure and shortages outside urban areas; private clinics available in Maputo but expensive for expats. No universal coverage for foreigners; private insurance essential.
